So...That was a long hiatus. Long time, no see and all that jazz.
Straight back to it. I've been desperate to be inspired by music lately because I gotta be honest, I feel a little let down by the amount of stuff that hits the charts these days, not that I regularly listen to that stuff but I've been at a loss to find some good stuff elsewhere.
Like I've said in previous posts, the majority of my favourite songs and rare finds come from TV shows and movies. All my TV shows start back up again in September. Boo. Insert sad face. So beside movies, which have been lacking in truly brilliant under-the-radar tunes from underground, unknown artists, I've been stuck with whatever I can get my ears on.
I'm actually on a classical hit recently. So I'll give you some tunes, including one of my favourite classical songs. Enjoy.
I really liked this track from Of Monsters and Men but it was just bought to my attention again in the trailer for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, starring Ben Stiller and Kristen Wiig and some other cool people. Looks like an interesting movie but I just really love the song choice, it fits the trailer perfectly. (If I could post the trailer I would but it's pretty much blocked everywhere at the moment but you can try here)
Of Monsters and Men - Dirty Paws
After just listening to this, it's been driving me mad that it completely reminds me of another track, after searching my brain for a few minutes I remembered a certain car advert that's been played on TV very recently. So below I have 'Home' by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Heroes.
Although pretty catchy, I don't think I could listen to this track over and over again. I basically wanted to post it so you could see the similarities in the two tracks. Also, it's a far longer track than it needs to be. Needs to be said.
This next track I heard from the movie The Disappearance of Alice Creed, not a film I would normally take time out to watch but it was on TV so I decided to give it a shot. I actually thought it was pretty good and this song ends the film on a pretty awesome note. Such a chill, eerie track. Her voice reminds me of someone else but I'll have to get back to you on that one.
Cathy Davey - Holy Moly
Now this one I heard during an interview I think, looking at the comments on youtube it's obviously been featured on ASOS so I probably heard it there most likely. Hell if I remember, plus Shazam has lost all my hits :( Had to reset my phone, you'd think that Shazam would keep the tracks that you've searched out!
Anyway, haven't heard of this chick before but I love her voice and the songs got a good summer beat to it.
YADi - The Blow
I was going to end this post here with my classical piece but then youtube auto-play started this other track which I LOVE LOVE LOVE. It's so brilliant. I heard this on the last season of the Vampire Diaries (it's also played in the new Romeo & Juliet trailer). I thought it played during a particularly heartbreaking moment in the series but I don't think it was, at least not compared to the other truly heartbreaking moments from that series. Damn that show and my tears!! Anyway, I listened to some of her other stuff but it's not as great as this one, but you should definitely give her album Conatus a listen.

And finally, a bit of classical culture shock to the system before I drop off to sleep.
This has to be my favourite classical piece ever, I think. Love it.

That should keep you occupied while I take another 3 month hiatus... I swear it won't be so long next time.

Imagine Dragons @ The Institute (Birmingham)

Exactly two weeks ago today I was on my way back from one of the best gigs of my life.
I've blogged about them several times before and I'll constantly be blogging about them from now on. In fact, the progress of my love for this band has grown and been documented on this blog since I started it last year. The first time I heard 'Demons' on that trailer for that (turns out quite awful) movie, to when I purchased the album, which I now realise must have been an import or unofficial release since I bought it in November and it was officially released in the UK earlier this month.
I blogged about the album when I got it and I've noticed the traffic for that particular post has sky rocketed over the last few weeks and I know it's because this band is just getting bigger and bigger by the minute.
They toured the UK late last year in smaller venues but missed out Birmingham so I didn't get a chance to see them. I am so unbelievably happy that I have now caught them when they played at The Institute on the 9th April.
The album does not even do this band justice to how they play live. Like I've said, BEST gig ever. The atmosphere was immense, the percussion, the drums, OH LORD THE DRUMS, so fucking amazing. The way that lead singer, Dan Reynolds, spoke to the audience, explaining what we were all feeling that night and what we feel when we go to concerts; that unique feeling that we belong, that all these people in this room are united for one night in our love for this band, this music. Forget all of our differences, and unite for our love of music, as cheesy as is sounds.
It's why I have NO problem attending gigs by myself and have done for years. You'll never quite truly understand what I mean unless you've done exactly that, because I might be in the queue, waiting to enter the venue, by myself, checking my phone so I don't look like a loser but the second I'm inside and crammed up to all these random people, our bodies uncomfortably pushed against each other, you can't help but feel united. You cannot help talking to random people and asking them things about this band you've all come to see. There's not a second that I feel alone. And I walk back to my car after the gig, surrounded by fans of this band and I feel so carefree and happy cause that band just made me feel on top of the freaking world!! (Yes, pun intended).
So to the gig, I just want to talk about a few of the songs and I'll add some videos as well but the only thing I really want to say in this post is GO SEE THEM LIVE. They're playing Isle of Wight festival and Reading & Leeds and I believe T in the Park. Not only that, but they plan to tour the UK again later this year... I will be there. In fact, if I can swing it, I'm going to attempt to go to the London gig too. See, I will even travel for this band. Look how easy I've made it for you, I've even given you the links... DOOOOOOO IT!!!! You won't regret it, I promise.
Anyway, first up is Demons, the song that started it all for me. It always surprises me when all these people, hundreds of them, show up to gigs and they all know the words and everything, yet I can't find one friend or colleague that knows of them. I feel like yelling out when I get there "Where the fuck have you all been hiding?!" That's kind of how I felt when they played this song.
There's not as many videos out there as I thought, this has the best sound and a great view. Hey Dan ;)
Here's my video if you wanna take a look. I'm a little further away, which was a bummer but also great cause you get to see the whole effect of the lights etc. They put a lot of fucking effort in the stage production by the way, more than I expected.
Next up, fucking LOVE this song, Bleeding Out. Another favourite off the album that I could not wait to hear live. Loved it. There's a long ass bass intro so if you want to get to the song, skip to 1:27, but you just have to hear this song.
So much passion.
Ahhh there's too many, I literally just wanna put the whole gig on here. I just can't even convey how much you all need to see this band! I'm literally dragging all my friends next time around cause they just can't miss this, even if they still have no idea who they are (and by that point I should just leave them in the cave they apparently live in) I'm still gonna take them!!
This is On Top of the World, which if you did happen to read my last post about Imagine Dragons then you'll know that my favourite lyrics are in this song. There's just no way you can't smile watching/listening to this song. Also, I recorded like 30 seconds to 1 minute of 3 songs from the entire gig because the floor was constantly bouncing, which I loved! Sometimes I want some songs recorded just so I can go back and reminisce but there's no way I'll forget this one. Everyone was jumping throughout the whole thing but especially during this song!
How can you not like them? Impossible.
I seriously want to give you 3 more but I'll just give you one and the links for the others because you just need to see them live and not on a computer screen.
The most anticipated song of the night and the greatest performance I've ever seen.

This just doesn't even do it justice but seriously, HOW IMMENSE IS THAT?! If you follow them on Twitter/Facebook, you might be aware that Dan broke his wrist, punching a drum, after watching this you understand why, yes?
Also, I'm gonna give you the live video that they shot themselves of Radioactive cause it's AMAZING and the sound it SOOOOO much better. Obviously.
Here's It's Time and Underdog and one of my favourite songs, that no one appears to have recorded, Nothing Left To Say (from the Manchester gig, which looks so much bigger with much better sound than the Birmingham one, I really hope they play something bigger next time. Also the link for this guys video's from Manchester cause they look/sound awesome.)
I've spoilt you enough for one post. You love them as much as me now, don't you? You can't deny it. Imagine Dragons cannot be denied. I'm glad I got to see them at The Institute because it was small and intimate and those are usually the best kinds of gigs, and I suspect they'll be performing in arenas if not this year then next year for sure.
This post has been all about how amazing this gig was and I desperately want to leave it at that, on this brilliant high note but I have to put my two cents in about the rest of it. Firstly, the support act, I've not heard from the people who went to this gig saying much about the support, it's like we've all chosen to ignore it because, well I at least, thought they were shit :/ They were called The Good Natured and because they seemed so epically bad and boring I decided to look them up when I got back and actually liked the more engaging band that seemed to be present in their videos compared to the distant 3-piece that stood on stage. The lead singer doesn't seem to have much presence unfortunately and was almost unrecognisable from the girl in their videos. Personal opinion, but she'll have to develop a personality on stage if they want to go anywhere, it's the downside of being the only girl in a band unfortunately, let alone the singer. Think Karen O, Hayley Williams, Shirley Manson. There's a certain way to work it. Maybe they'll eventually come into their own but they were way too... meh to be supporting Imagine Dragons.
Secondly, the sound at The Institute... was questionable. I wouldn't blame the sound engineer because since watching these videos, everything seemed perfectly clear, the guitar, the bass, everything, but where I was further back, a little to the right of the stage, I could BARELY hear the guitar, in fact I was surprised that there were guitar solos in a couple of the songs since watching these videos because I couldn't bloody hear it. I'm blaming the structure of the venue and the dodgy sound system they have. The speakers were limited (it is a small venue), the line array speakers on either side of the stage are in the direct path of the balcony, so you've got a good chunk of sound being blocked by the structure, whereas it should be free to reach the back of the venue.
That's all I have to say about it for now, because beside it being the best gig I've been to, those two things really did bug me.

The Daytrotter Sessions

I forgot to introduce you to Daytrotter, didn't I? I suck. You see, too much has been going on and I've not been inspired musically wise lately, so the blog has been ditched...for like a month. But I'm back you see, and I'm Smokinnnnnnnn'
OK so I've been watching clips from The Mask, sue me. I love Jim Carrey. (When are they gonna bring that movie out on DVD????!!!! Makes. No. Sense.)
Anyhoo...
Daytrotter is your new best friend. It will introduce to bands you've never heard of, give you the bands that you love, and will even make you love the bands you loath. It's that good. Daytrotter basically invite bands and artists to come into their studio and play live sessions. These sessions are recorded and then are offered to members (or if you join now, I think you'll get a free trial, which is what I did and basically downloaded as much as possible before my trial ended.)
These sessions are amazing. Not only do these bands come in and sing and play live as though you were hearing them at a concert, they play oldies :) You know, those songs that you haven't heard in agggeeeesssss... maybe they don't play them live any more, or perhaps they can't simply do them on stage at a gig but only in a studio. It's simple cool.
One of the artists that came in and recorded was Ingrid Michaelson. Now I wasn't a huge fan before, and I'm still not really but her live rendition of 'Die Alone' is too good to pass up.
So here it is.
Next up is Grizzly Bear. I LOVE Grizzly Bear. I don't even know how I came about them or heard of them but I did and I'm so happy I did. Their song 'Shift', on their album 'Horn Of Plenty' actually freaked me out to be honest. I loved the lyrics but the sound on it just scared me. (You can lol it's all right.) Then I heard a different version on this video somebody made (before Blue Valentine came out. I only just realised it was in that movie after searching youtube) and it was so beautiful and just SO much better, I thought. Then came along Daytrotter's.
Yes, Grizzly Bear did a session and played this alternative version.
So beautiful.
Oh my GOD. It's just so amazing every time I listen to it.
I could give you more (yes, more Laura Marling) but I need you to go and discover it and have fun, it's just so good. Also, while we're at it Marcus Foster did a live session back in June and Daytrotter still haven't put it up on their website. So what I want you to do is go bug the shit out of them, ask them where the hell it is and why on earth it's not up yet??!! Seriously, it was so amazing. I listened to this session live, YES you can tune in and listen to it being recorded live, listen as they fuck up and have to start again and again. It's so beautiful! Dooooo it. Do it now!
But yeah as I was saying, Marcus Foster did 3 (I think) amazing songs which blew me away and I NEED it. So go bug them. If you click on the links above, it will take you to their twitter pages!
That's all I'm giving you tonight folks. It's 3am. I'm tired and cranky. I'll do another post in the next couple of days (or tomorrow maybe).

Closer (2004)

Just a quick post because I'm super tired and I totally should have done this earlier when I was thinking about it but, of course, I'm the BEST procrastinator in the world so...
First off, the song that has been plaguing me, or you know, filling my mind with unicorns and rainbows with how awesome it is - On 'n' On by Justice.
Like, SO amazing. I love this song. I remember downloading their album because I really liked Civilization, which everyone knows by now, but it's taken me ages to actually sit and listen to the whole thing. However, I recently had a long train journey to fill with beautiful music so I listened it all. I picked On 'n' On at random, like I usually do, judging a song by its title. It did not disappoint and then it bleeds straight into the next song on the album Brianvision. Also goooood.
I'm pretty sure they've released it as a single now which is unsurprising as it's one of the few songs on the album that actually has lyrics. So hopefully more people will hear it but if not.... Here it is. Use headphones and walk down the street to it, I dare you!
OK. I just watched the video for the first time. Oh my God is it WEIRD...!? Think I'll stick to listening to it instead of watching this. Also, get the album version... there's an extra verse which is awesome...and it's just generally better.
Next order of business. I just re-watched Closer. I LOVE this movie. Insufferable people doing insufferable things to each other. Such is life. Anyway, besides Jude Law irritating me by generally being Jude Law, I really do love this movie, it makes me weep but also because I love Damien Rice who sings the track which runs through the movie, The Blower's Daughter.
It's one of those songs where you hear it and immediately think of the film instead of the artist singing it. Which is what I love about some music.
Listen and weep. Then watch Closer if you haven't...or even if you have, and weep some more.
That is all.

'Start blogging!' - Yeah I'll get right on that...

OK here goes...
So it’s 2am and I decided that there’s no better time to start this blog than right now.
This is the first entry and will likely be the most long winded entry, so bare with me.
I completed my university degree 15 days ago, although technically it doesn’t finish until the 10th June and I won’t be able to collect my results until the 10th July. I actually didn’t even think it would be that soon but either way I'm not too confident about the results.
You see, as it turns out, I don’t think university was a great fit for me. I’ve never been much of an academic scholar but I wanted a focus in my life, I needed time to figure out what I wanted to do, but you see, people(family) won’t generally give you the time and space you need to do that without breathing down your neck, begging you to sort your life out. It’s annoying but I can’t say I blame them. I beg myself daily to get it together. So I decided to go to university. The question my parents asked when I told them: “Why on earth would you want to go to university?”
I’m still asking myself.
So 3 years have flown by and although there were some really great times and I met some fantastic people, it turns out that writing 3000 word essay’s about the music industry in China doesn’t quite do it for me. (*Note: I studied Music Management) I'm predicting a 2:2 for my final grade... which isn’t a 2:1, which unfortunately is what you kinda need to get graduate jobs etc. Massive disappointment, I know. (Not sarcasm btw.)
However, I cannot do anything about that now and I have to move on. What I did learn within my 3 years at uni was something that I knew along was I wanted to do. I want to work in sync. For those that don’t know and are interested; sync is when music is combined with a moving visual image. So basically those songs that are played in television adverts, TV programmes, trailers, movies, in games and the like.
The job title that I want: Music Supervisor. This is ‘The Dream Job’. And is also the job I am unlikely to ever have. ‘Cause I’m a pessimist and I don’t believe in luck.
But I’d also really love to work with adverts. So that’s my aim for now. You see though, the only experience I have in the actual music industry is my degree and my absolute passion for music. Not a lot that’s going to set me apart, let’s be frank.
But music has always been there for me. HUGE cliché I know, so call it altruistic or whatever but I want music to be there for other people too. And that is my focus in life.
I've always loved music from such a young age, I always knew the latest releases even when I was 8/9 years old. Listening to Garbage was my turning point, I have to say, and they will be featured on this blog at some point but I truly discovered my love for music when I watched Garden State. The soundtrack is IMMENSE and I love every single second of it and the movie. (Please go watch it, like right now.)
There’s a reason Zach Braff won a Grammy Award for that soundtrack album. Go buy it, YOU FOOLS!
So every entry will feature a different song. A song I want you to listen to and most likely a song that has been loved by me and listened by me so many times I can’t count. A song that has influenced me and a song that I want to influence you.
Today is this gem from the ever loved Garden State OST. Kinda fitting, no?
